Baai baai Nuri!

Don't be afraid, the reason why I couldn't update earlier is that I had some storm on my PC as well, it didn't start anymore. With a lost Saturday afternoon and Windows reinstalled, I can bring you the news...

Things went pretty smoothly. Although storm signal 9 was up for a long time, the weather on our side of the island was doable. That was until the eye of the storm passed Hong Kong, and winds suddenly appeared from the other direction hitting the east side of the island in the face. That scared the hell out of us, as we we're sitting close to the window at the study room. The window shook heavily with dirt hitting the window and a loud screaming noise gave both of us the creeps.

Now the sky has cleared up and as far we can see there is no cloud to detect. Our view is a brilliant clear sky with the evening sun shining nicely on the green mountain side. The rubbish on the street has been cleaned. As if nothing happened before we're up for a Saturday night out. :-)

Dutch: Ben maar niet bang, de reden dat ik niet eerder een update kon plaatsen was doordat het ook flink stormde op mijn PC, deze wilde namelijk niet meer starten. Na een verloren zaterdagmiddag en een nieuwe Windows installatie kan ik jullie het nieuws brengen...

Het ging eigenlijk erg soepeltjes. Hoewel het stormsignaal 9 lang actief was, was het weer aan onze kant van het eiland acceptabel. Totdat het oog van de storm ons passeerde en er plotseling rukwinden vanuit de andere richting ons aanvielen. We schrokken ons het hemd van het lijf, want we zaten vlak bij het raam in de studiekamer. Dat raam begon hevig te schudden en met schapend vuil langschurend en een schreeuwend lawaai van de wind. Brr, we hadden al onze haren overeind staan!

Nu is het prachtig helder weer met geen wolkje aan de lucht. Ons uitzicht is heerlijk helder en de avondzon geeft een mooie gouden gloed op de groene berghelling. De rotzooi op straat is ook al opgeruimd. Alsof er niets is gebeurd is zijn wij klaar voor een avondje uit. :-)

Preparing for the worst

I just woke up, and both Eva and I rushed to the TV to see the warning signal. A huge disappointment fell on us when we still saw the T3 icon on the screen. This basically means we would have to go to work while knowing there will be a time of the day where we would need to abruptly stop and hurry back home.

Luckily the Hong Kong Observatory provides more information and I was satisfied with this passage in the warning bulletin of 6:45:

According to the present forecast track, Nuri will be
rather close to Hong Kong this afternoon and tonight with a
chance of direct hit to Hong Kong. The Observatory will
issue the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 before 8 a.m. this
morning.

Things are still looking pretty normal. The sky has an overcast of clouds, but nothing unusual. However, the flags on the temple across the street wave firmly in the wind, and from past typhoons I know it's getting worse. We live between a mountain gap, and wind is pushed between our house and the mountain side, so I better not open any windows!

I'll head back to bed and try to get some sleep before all the noise starts. Meanwhile you can entertain and inform yourself by tracking the typhoon on the Hong Kong Observatory website. The current forecast is that Nuri is passing straight over Hong Kong and we will have some chances to face eye to eye with Nuri. :-)


Ik ben net wakker, en Eva en ik zijn naar de tv gerend om te kijken wat het waarschuwingsignaal was. Het was een behoorlijke teleurstelling om te zien dat T3 nog steeds op het scherm stond. Dit betekent botweg dat we naar het werk moeten gaan, terwijl we weten dat we ergens in de ochtend onderbroken worden en in alle drukte naar huis moeten snellen.

Gelukkig biedt het Hong Kong Observatory meer informatie en was ik meer tevreden met de volgende passage in het waarschuwingsbulletin van 6:45:

Hierin staat dat Nuri volgens de voorspellingen erg dicht bij Hong Kong komt tegen de middag en vanavond wel eens frontaal op Hong Kong kan inslaan. Het observatorium gaat daarom voor 8 uur 's ochtens waarschuwingsignaal 8 afgeven wat dus inhoud dat iedereen thuis moet blijven.

Toch ziet alles er nog redelijk normaal uit. De lucht is bewolkt, maar niets ongebruikelijks. Aan de andere kant wapperen de vlaggen bij de tempel aan de overkant van de straat flink aan hun stokje. Uit ervaring van de vorige typhoons weet ik dat het nu gaat verslechteren. We wonen namelijk in een dal tussen de bergen, waar de wind doorheen wordt gesluisd, dus ik maak voorlopig de ramen niet meer open!

Ik duik mijn bedje weer in om nog wat bij te slapen voordat het lawaai start. Ondertussen kun je jezelf vermaken en informeren op de website van het Hong Kong Observatory. Met de huidige voorspelling komt Nuri lijnrecht over Hong Kong en hebben we dus kansen om oog in oog te staan met Nuri. ;-)

Silence before the storm

It's been a long time since I've updated this weblog, and what could be better than to make a new post with a big bang?

It's the silence before the storm. Nuri is its name, and it forms in the shape of a major typhoon raging straight forward with one destination: our lovely Hong Kong.

They say it's going to be a bad boy. Warning level T8 is a piece of cake for this one, no, T9 or even T10 is what Nuri is going for! This typhoon could be such a strong one, that the last comparable one has been seen for more than 50 years ago!

The strange thing is that everything is still calm and easy. Warning signal T1 dominated the day. It's so contradicting! I still hope that everyone took some preparations, because I could see a lot of people just continuing their ordinary things on my way back home. But Eva and I are well prepared. This time I stocked all the storage locations with food to survive two days locked indoor. We just make it a happy time. :-)

Dutch: Het is lang geleden sinds mijn laatste update, maar wat is er beter dan een nieuw bericht met een grote knal?

Het is de stilte voor de storm. Nuri is de naam, en het komt in de vorm van een gigantische typhoon kaarsrecht op Hong Kong afstormen.

Ze zeggen dat het een stoute jongen wordt. Waarschuwingssignaal T8 is een peuleschil voor deze kerel, nee, een T9 of zelfs T10 is waar Nuri voor gaat! Deze typhoon kon wel eens zo sterk worden dat een gelijkwaardige al in geen 50 jaar is gezien!

Het rare is dat alles nog kalm en rustig is. Het waarschuwingsignaal T1 heeft de hele dag overheerst. Het is zo tegenstrijdig! Toch hoop ik dat iedereen voorbereidingen heeft getroffen. Op mijn weg naar huis zag ik nog heel veel mensen hun alledaagse dingen doen. Maar Eva en ik zijn goed voorbereid. Deze keer hebben we alle voorraadkasten goed gevuld, en kunnen we het wel 2 dagen binnenshuis opgesloten doorhouden. We maken er gewoon een leuke tijd van. :-)
