Back in HK

DUTCH UPDATE:
Ok, hier even voor iedereen die dit bericht graag in het Nederland wilde lezen -> de Nederlandse versie :).

Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik hier wat gepost heb, dus vandaar dat ik maar weer eens even een berichtje erop heb gezet. Maar dit duurde allemaal zo lang omdat ik op 4 augustus vertrokken ben uit Hong Kong voor een lange vakantie naar Nederland. Ik ben daar ongeveer 6 weken geweest, en heb het daar weer goed naar mijn zin gehad met vrienden en familie!

Ik heb vanalles gedaan in Nederland. Ik ben 10 dagen met mijn vrienden naar Kroatie geweest, waar we even goed gefist en vakantiegevierd hebben. Was weer goede fun :). Na mijn vakantie daar ben ik weer aan de slag gegaan bij Assembleon, alleen dit keer ben ik bij ons hoofdkantoor in Veldhoven gaan werken voor een paar weken. Inmiddels ben ik dus weer terug in Hong Kong, ik ben hier op 17 september weer aangekomen.

Ik heb hier inmiddels al vanalles gedaan. Lekker sporten (squash!!) zo'n 3 keer per week. Alhoewel ik nog steeds verlies, dus ik moet maar eens goed aan de conditie gaan werken! Verder heb ik al een aantal keren eten gekookt (zelf!), dus ik ben dadelijk een soort kok als ik weer terug ben in Nederland. Verder ben ik nog aan het studeren in wat marketing boeken die mij aangeraden zijn door Timelsinga himself, dus dat moeten wel goede boeken zijn (wat ze ook zijn trouwens)!

Afgelopen zaterdag had ik wat Nederlanders uit Macau op bezoek. Om precies te zijn de vriendin van de broer van de vriend van Kim (mijn zus)... jaja, moeilijk te volgen :). Maar iniedergeval studeert zij een half jaartje in Macau, en ze was samen met 2 vriendinnen naar Hong Kong gekomen. Ik heb ze hier wat plekker in Hong Kong laten zien, en ze zijn zelfs wezen winkelen ( waar ze alleen maar Electronica kochten :-) ). Iniedergeval 's avonds zijn we goed cocktails wezen drinken en op stap geweest in Hong Kong. Was een leuk dagje!

Dit was het weer voor deze post. Ik zal snel weer een update plaatsen als ik weer wat nieuwe spannende dingen meegemaakt heb. Volgend weekend is er een boattrip, dus dan komt er vast weer een story ;).

ENGLISH

Well... it's a very very very long time ago that I've posted something on this website, so thats why I'm posting now. Why did it take so long... well I left Hong Kong on the 4th of August to enjoy my holiday in the Netherlands, were I catched up with all my friends an family, and had a great time with them!

Furthermore I went to Croatia for 10 days with a couple of my friends, were we had big fun and did a lot of partying ("fist'N" in dutch!!). After my Croatia holiday I've worked at my companies main office in Veldhoven for a couple of weeks, and now I'm back again in Hong Kong to finish our big project here. I arrived last week on Monday the 17th of September.

Last week I did a lot of sporting ( played -and lost squash 3 evenings in a row... :-) ), I did my own cooking for almost the whole week, and I started studying in some Marketing books. At the moment I am reading 'The Blue Ocean Strategy' (ISBN:1591396190) which is a very good book about creating new uncontested marketing space. Timelsinga recommended this book to me, and he was right about it being an interesting book.

Last Saturday was my first evening I went partying! Which is very unique for me, because I used to party a lot more.... but I think I've become much more healthier and wiser ;). That Saturday I had a couple of friends visiting from Macau. Actually I never met them before, but one of them happend to be the girlfriend of my sister's boyfriend's brother ( can you follow it ;) ). Anyway they started an exchange program in Macau this September, and will stay there for a couple of months. They were coming to Hong Kong last Saturday, and asked me to show them a bit around in Hong Kong. I have added some photos of that day, which was a very good day! The most funny part for me was that I took the 3 of them for shopping (which were all girls), and all they bought were electronics :-)..!

Well, for now that's almost the end of my post I think. This afternoon we can leave the office early because tomorrow is a public holiday (The mid-autumn festival). Anyway that doesn't stop me from coming to the office, as I have no plans tomorrow and want to finish some work here. I will do another update somewhere next week, after the partying planned this weekend ;).

I made it safely to london, because I'm now typing this message at the airrport.
The flight was confortable with a nice spacious seat and good entetainment. I was also able to have a good sleep.

Now I'll head fo my flight to Amsterdam! :-)

On holiday to The Netherlands

It sounds so weird, but my return to The Netherlands will probably feel like a holiday. In the 5 weeks I will stay there, I will need to arrange a lot of stuff for my migration to Hong Kong. Graduate, stop my company, finally fill in the tax forms, let all the organizations know I'll move and then have some time to say goodbye to my family and friends.

But in between I'm planning to go on a long trip trough The Netherlands. I want to travel to all the famous and traditional places and record them with my photo camera. This all on my moped. So in a few weeks I hope to amuse you with some real Dutch stuff! :-)

Now it's so near I'm so happy to go back home. I'm looking forward to see my family and friends. Got some nice souvenirs so now it's time to go home and pack my stuff. ;-)

Boat trip

At the beginning of this month I had a nice boat trip arranged by my friend Avis. Even though it was on such a short term, she managed to get us a boat, lunch and acompanied speedboat for wake boarding and some banana boat action!

So in the early morning (as I call 9am on Sunday), we took a taxi to Sai Kung. Along the way we picked up a friend of her and met with her colleagues. Actually it was more a company trip, but some extra friends were invited as well. Even though I was the only foreigner, it was pretty easy to catch up with the rest. So all very entusiast we went to the Sai Kung pier to get on the boat.



On arrival at the place where the boat put its anchor in the water the scenery was like this.



It was a really joyful day with lots of drinks, laughing and... yes, lucky draw! Got a nice watertight pastic pocket so my camera was spared that day. ;-)

Too bad my wake boarding skills were not that great as it was my first time. And I got home with major muscle aching the next morning and an eager feeling to try it once more because it was really cool, even just to try.

And now the end is near...

...and so I face the final curtain... yeah, but not really :-).

A couple of more days left and then we will be leaving Hong Kong. But fortunately not for good, as we will be back in September. I will visit the Netherlands for 6 weeks, do some traveling there (Croatia), and of course some working. We have to wait for approval of our working visa, and of course its good to see family and friends again!

It's been a very long time ago since I did a last update. So what happened lately... we did a lot of working, partying (I did :-)), met some nice people, losing with squash. I found a cool place in Soho. The bar is called 'Joyce is not here', and is a very small but well decorated place. They have a jam session every Thursday, were you can just walk in and bring your instrument. Really cool place, with a lot of nice people.

Furthermore I've been so stupid to lose my phone in a taxi. So I will try to not fall asleep again in taxi's with my phone still in my hand....

So a couple of more days of hard work... we have to finish our final internship reports and the last bits of the reporting system here. And for the rest of course one evening of partying planned, the goodbye party, so that will be good. Luckily I will fly home the next day, so then I can rest a bit. Unfortunately that is during the night, and I will have to be fit enough to work and pack during the day. But anyway, I've managed to survive that a couple of times before... :-)

Lost stuff

I don't know why, but everyone seems lose stuff... Adam lost his phone twice. Eva lost hers in a taxi. Jamie lost hers too. Daniel decided to take a swim with it. I know two people more who did the same. I lost my wallet, and now Patrick lost his phone as well! :-S

So that's why Patrick won't be reachable at his HK mobile phone number...

P.S. Just to be sure, I already made a backup of my phonebook. Maybe you should do it too? ;-)

Hong Kong 10th Anniversary

At the beginning of this month we had another public holiday. This time it was the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong. So it's 10 years ago that Hong Kong became part of China again. For our Dutch readers I can recommend the blogpost of my boss Hans, since I wouldn't be able to describe it better.

To celebrate this, there were held a lot of events in Hong Kong. One of them was the big fireworks display in the Victoria Harbour. Of course Patrick and I didn't want to miss that. Especially because I can still recall the great show of on the Chinese New Year. This time it was told to be even bigger, so something we definitely shouldn't miss!

And it was great! Huge fireworks display and it was very worthwhile to wait there for 2 hours. :-) You can have a look at it yourself in the movie below.

A new home

Last Thursday I was in total stress. I found out that it is so difficult to find a cheap and nice place to rent, and that I had no time left to have a good look. I decided to go for flat-sharing (share a flat with somebody) and I could find only one affordable advertisement. So I sent an email at night. Actually a bit accidentally because my laptop wouldn't shut down.

The next morning I received a phone call from a friendly lady and we made an appointment to have a look at the apartment the same night. So I informed Eva, and we both went to the apartment. Exactly at 8pm we arrived.

When the door opened I was overwhelmed by the nice decorations and I felt immediately at home. I had a nice talk with the owner Tess, and it clicked with Eva as well. The apartment is in good shape (not so common for that price range), cheap ("only" 4500 HKD or 450 euros a month) and quiet. That last thing is quite important since it's next to a busy road and the apartment is only at the 5th floor. But that road makes it very convenient to get to work. The apartment is also close to Eva's place. Furthermore everything I need is literally around the corner!

Although I haven't got a real place for myself, it is still very nice. I like to live with others, since I enjoyed my time with my old roommates in The Netherlands and the time here in HK with Patrick. Furthermore its nice to have a friend around, because it is still a big city.

So I'm really looking forward to live there. It's on Hong Kong Island this time, so more close to the city centre. Luckily the neighbourhood is quiet but has all the convenience of living in the city centre. I'm just a few minutes away from the city buzz and nature parks. Great! :-)

Daniel visiting us, The Peak and Dragon Boat Festival

As said before, I still have a lot to tell. So here is a second try to catch up... :-)

A few weeks ago our friend Daniel visited us again. This time he didn't traveled from Macao, but from a train from China. So the first day he had to catch up some good sleep. After regaining some energy we took him of course to some cool places, like some bars and most important: The Peak. Somehow he managed to skip the 1# hot-spot of Hong Kong?!

Luckily we had a public holiday, and that very hot day we took the bus to The Peak. It's a bumpy bus ride, over a twisting road. We sat in the front seat of the famous biplane HK buses, so we could have a good look around and feel scared to death when another bus or steep wall just rushes by just a few inches from your head. But we made it without - but close to -having a heart attack.

Since we took the bus, it drives for the last past over the "back" side of the peak. Therefore, you have an opportunity to see both sides of the island. The city part, and the nature park part. So when you arrive at the peak tower, you're pretty amazed by the view (because you can look at once over the whole city), and that's exactly what Daniel's face told us when we got there. To experience it yourself. Here is a photo and a video.

But the day was far from over, since it was a public holiday celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival! So we headed to Stanley, where one of the two big Dragon Boat events took place. However, it took us a while, since half the population of HK migrates that day to those two hot-spots. And hot is was! Burning sun, but with the slight sea breeze and cheerful atmosphere it's pretty okay. At Stanley we split up, and I joined Eva and her friend.

The Dragon Boat races are pretty cool. Slim boats with a team of peddlers and one to hit the drums. The races go very quick, since they move over a distance of about 1 to 2 kilometre. The boats row towards the beach so that everyone can see the spectacular finish before the boats shove up the beach. Each boat has a team of a specific country with their own colour. No use for me to shout "HOLLAND! HOLLAND!", because I couldn't spot our orange Dutch team... But would they have heard that anyway on top of all the other cheering and screaming plus the sound of the drums on each boat? I think not... ;-)

We arrived late in the afternoon, so the races were about to end. Because we didn't want to be in the rush-hour of the giant migration back home, we hurried to the bus stop. Luckily we could catch our bus within a few minutes (that on itself is pretty amazing compared to the time we had to wait to get the bus to Stanley), and went back to Central to jump on the MTR. From there to Kowloon to take the KCR, then in a taxi to arrive at our destination: I have totally no clue... But, our guide (Eva's friend) knew where to go, and we got there. It was a very local restaurant, although that's a fancy name for it. Big place with lots of tables, out-door style: big round tables and small plastic stools to sit on. Great atmosphere, lots of people talking and enjoying their food and (on almost every table) beer. The food was delicious and extremely cheap! What I've been told, is that this is a very local place to eat, even for locals, and that there are only a few places like these left in HK. Too bad, because it is so nice to have dinner there!

Rock Climbing

Ok, so here is something more interesting than the dull small posts I made lately. ;-)

A few weeks ago I went rock climbing with the Philips staff club. I applied for it, and I was one of the lucky ones that got randomly selected. With me a few colleagues joined the club. Too bad one of them was not able to come, but lucky for me because I was asked if I knew some friends who would like to join in stead. Well, it was not that much trouble to invite my girlfriend Eva, and so we prepared next day to go there early. Very early, because it was the day after Patrick's birthday party at Lang Kwai Fong. Unfortunately I couldn't stay long at LKF, because I was tired enough to report my lost wallet at the Police station.

So with some borrowed cash we took a cab to King's Park. We arrived almost as the first ones, so we had a chance to change and get some climbing shoes, since Eva was not prepared to bring ones. Those shoes are really nice to climb, because they perfectly fit the shape of your feet, are more flexible and have a longer heel. So way better for climbing. With that we're able to face our challenge of the day: the 18 metre high artificial rock climbing wall...



Then, when everybody was there, the training could begin. First we start off with some stretching. Everything was nicely translated from Cantonese to English by Eva. So I knew how to move. Then it was time to get the instructions for the tools. Everybody had to find a partner. About the same weight, because one would lift the other. Luckily Eva and I did match. :-)

We got explained what was meant by the terms 'CLIMBING!' and 'TENSION!'. So we knew how to give each other a break while climbing. It works this way. Because you're connected to each other with a rope, you can use your own body mass to lift the other because of the balance effect. This will require almost no strength for the one who climbs, so he or she can take a rest.

After the instruction we we're all ready to start climbing. Eva may go first, and she did pretty well! Because she already had a day of rock climbing before, she knew how to put her weight and got at the 7 metre top in record time. :-) Although I was not that fast, it was cool to climb up, and the climbing shoes provided a good help. My colleagues we're also great, and we all reached the 7 metre top.





After a few challenges it was time to face the whole wall, 18 metres high. And from the bottom that looks really high... So I collected my best guts, and started to climb. This time Eva didn't pull me up, but somebody else. Too bad he didn't manage the tension procedure well, so I couldn't take a good rest along the way, and basically had to keep lifting myself all the way. With only small spots to get grip that's a difficult job. But I managed to get as high as 16 metre. Great view from that altitude. Look at all the small ants down there, haha! ;-) The burning sun did its work, and it was time to go down. Too bad I hadn't enough energy to climb the last 2 metre, but still quite some performance for the first time. :-)
So Eva would show how to do it, and she did! Se went up so quickly, and with me pulling the rope (after some rest, haha) she got all the way up, the full 18 metres!


The rock climbing was very cool, and I want to do it definitely some other time again. Maybe get a certificate, so I can guide others. Then I also will have better training so I know how to face the diagonal walls. :-)

Harry Potter in da house!

Ok, this shouldn't get any worse! Just a few minutes ago, one of my coworkers asked if he may take a picture of me, for his wife back home. Why? Because I look so much like Harry Potter! Actually, more people are telling me this, and it's not wise for me to stand close to a poster of the upcomming Harry Potter movie. People on the street even start to stare and point at me! So, I've come up with a plan. The 15th we'll visit the cinema to see the movie, and then I'll try to find some round glasses and try to put my hair in the same way. Let the madness begin! :-)

Het moet niet veel erger worden! Een paar minuten geleden vroeg een collega of hij van mij een foto mocht nemen voor zijn vrouw thuis. Waarom? Omdat ik zoveel op Harry Potter lijk! Opmerkelijk genoeg vertellen meer mensen mij dit, en het is tegenwoordig voor mij niet meer slim om langs een poster van de aankomende Harry Potter bioscoopfilm te gaan staan. Zelfs mensen op straat staren mij aan en wijzen naar mij! Zodoende heb ik een plan bedacht. De 15e gaan we namelijk naar de film, en ik wil zorgen dat ik dan een bril met ronde glazen bij me heb en mijn haar op de zelfde manier doe. Laat de gekte maar beginnen! :-)

De weersverwachting van Hong Kong is niet veel beter dan die van Nederland. Gelukkig ziet de lokale weersverwachting voor het weekend veelbelovend uit.

The good and the bad (news)

Well, this will be a log with some special highlights, including career news and money crisis! So what happened? Well, yesterday I had a talk with my boss Hans, and he announced me the amazing news that he would like to offer me a one year contract in Hong Kong after my graduation. There still need to be arranged some things, but I'm confirmed that the process is ongoing. :-)

In my total happiness I went home and lost my wallet on the minibus. My banking cards, insurance cards, Dutch Identity Card, apartment key card, octopus and 700HKD gone! Totally in panic I walked down the whole minibus route, but couldn't find the minibus (they're sometimes waiting at the end station). So I went straight to home and blocked my credit card. Bought with borrowed money (thanks for that Daniel!) a new key card. Then we went to the bus station to find there the minibus end station and explained my situation to the route manager. He noted everything down and we were ready to head off to Lan Kwai Fong for Patrick's and Ton's bday-party. Went after dinner to the Police station to fill in an form what took quite some time. So that's the bad news...

However, I'm so lucky that my bank accidentally sent me those double new banking cards to Hong Kong. Because I was able to enable that unused card that I still have within 30 minutes over phone and email. This was more than enough to restore my trust in my bank again. :-D

Nou, dit wordt een bericht met speciale hoogtepunten waaronder carrière nieuws en een geldcrisis! Dus, wat is er gebeurd? Nou, gisteren heb ik met mijn baas Hans gepraat, en hij kondigde het geweldige nieuws aan dat hij mij een jaarcontract wil aanbieden in Hong Kong voor na mijn afstuderen. Er moet nog steeds een paar dingen geregeld worden, maar het proces is in ieder geval op gang. :-)

In mijn gelukkigheid ben ik toen naar huis gegaan om in de minibus mijn portemonnee te verliezen. Mijn bankpassen, verzekeringspassen, Nederlandse Identiteitskaart, apartement card-key octopus en 700HKD, allemaal weg! Volledig in paniek ben ik toen de gehele minibusroute afgelopen, maar ik kon niet het eindstation vinden (waar ze soms nog even blijven wachten). Dus ik ben gelijk naar huis gegaan en heb mijn creditcard geblokkeerd. Toen heb ik een nieuwe key-card gekocht met geleend geld van Daniel (bedankt daarvoor!). Toen zijn we samen naar het busstation gegaan om daar het eindstation te vinden en de situatie uit te legen aan de minibus manager. Hij heeft toen alles opgeschreven en we waren gereed om naar Lan Kwai Fong te gaan om Patrick's en Ton's feestje te bezoeken. Daarna ben ik naar het Politiebureau gegaan om daar aangifte te doen en dat duurde even voordat ik daarmee klaar was. Dus dat is het slechte nieuws...

Gelukkig heeft mijn bank dubbele passetjes naar mij verstuurd in Hong Kong, waardoor ik deze binnen 30 minuten telefonisch en over e-mail kon activeren. Dit was voldoende om mijn vertrouwen in de bank te herstellen. :-D

Hieperdepiep... Hoeraaa!

Yes, today's a big day for Patrick since he's now official mature... Happy 21th birthday Patrick! :-)

Ja, vandaag is een grote dag voor Patrick, want hij is nu officieel volwassen geworden... Hartelijk gefeliciteerd met je 21ste verjaardag Patrick! :-)

Yes, there is lately more to read at this weblog. But what do you think about seeing some stuff? Well, good news for you. I finally found some time to upload videos.

I want to start with a video from our Hiking trip near Sai Wan Beach. There we took a sampan boat ride back home. Adrenaline rushing trough our veins!



Of course I also uploaded the thunderstorm video. However my simple camera couldn't record the smaller lightning... So it actually looks kind of normal. But I can ensure you it was really there! I'm not seeing things you know... ;-)

Ja, er is de laatste tijd een stuk meer te lezen op dit weblog. Maar wat dacht je hier van: je kunt nu ook wat zien! Ik heb namelijk eindelijk wat tijd gevonden om de video's die ik heb geschoten online te knallen.

Hierboven zie je als eerste de video van onze sampan bootrit naar nuit na onze Hike naar Sai Wan Beach. Adrenaline stromend door onze aderen!

Daaronder kun je de video zien die ik van het onweer heb geschoten. Jammergenoeg kan mijn simpel cameratje niet alle kleine flitsen opnemen, dus het ziet er nu vrij normaal uit. Maar ze waren er echt wel! Ik ga echt geen dingen zien hoor! ;-)

Visit from The Netherlands and good news

This week we have a visitor from The Netherlands, out colleague Peter. He is going to help to bring the project to Europe, so we're now also on the global tour... :-)

Besides an introduction to our work we also shown him some cool places here in Hong Kong. Yesterday we went with our other ICT colleague Roman to a dim-sum restaurant. Of course the coconut desert with frog flavour could not be skipped and Peter liked it as well... :-) After work it was time to grab some beers. Especially for me, since I kind of skipped my weekend. Patrick and Peter went first to Aqua Spirit in One Peking Road tower, with a great view over the HK skyline. I joined them later on at the Ned Kellies. We had a tipical chinese meal at a restaurant across the street and after that it was time to enjoy the music and some more beers at Ned Kellies. This night reminded me about the ones we had when we first arrived here because you probably won't do the same in The Netherlands on a monday evening. ;-)

Furthermore I got the good news that today I signed my official extension of the project here in HK until August 2nd. Now let's hope that there is also something for after my graduation in The Netherlands...


Dutch:

Deze week hebben we bezoek vanuit Nederlands, onze collega Peter. Hij gaat ons helpen het project naar Europa over te brengen, dus we zijn momenteel op de internationale toer... :-)

Naast een introductie van ons werk hier hebben we hem ook al wat leuke plekken in Hong Kong laten zien. Zo zijn we gisteren met onze ander ICT-collega Roman naar een dim-sum restaurant geweest. Uiteraard kon het kokosnoottoetje met kikkeringredient niet ontkomen worden en Peter moest toegeven dat het prima smaakte. :-) Na het werk was het tijd om een biertje te pakken. Zeker voor mijzelf omdat ik min of meer mijn weekend heb overgeslagen. Patrick en Peter zijn eerst naar de Aqua Spirit in de One Peking Road toren gegaan waar je een prachtig uitzicht hebt over de Hong Kong skyline. Later op de avond ben ik hun gaan versterken bij de Ned Kellies waar we eerst aan de overkant van de straat bij een typisch Chinees restaurant hebben gegeten. Die avond deed me denken aan die we ook hadden toen we hier aankwamen omdat je dit zeker niet in Nederland op een maandagavond na kunt doen. ;-)

Verder heb ik nog het goede nieuws dat ik vandaag mijn officiele extensie tot 2 augustus van het project heb ondertekend. Nu nog hopen dat er ook iets voor na het afstuderen er in zit...

Mmm, Calvé pindakaas

Yes, I really thanked my colleage Roman for this, because he brought me some peanut butter from The Netherlands! He had to go to Assembléon in Veldhoven and therefore had the chance to visit a duch supermarket. The peanut butter in Hong Kong tastes like shit, so I'm really glad he could bring me some real peanut butter. I need this, because I want to grow big and strong... ;-)

Dutch:

Ik heb mijn collega Roman heel erg bedankt voor dit, want hij heeft voor mij uit Nederland pindakaas meegenomen! Aangezien hij naar Assembléon in Veldhoven moest, had hij de kans om een supermarkt binnen te stappen. De pindakaas hier in Hong Kong smaakt als troep, en ik ben echt blij dat hij tenminste échte pindakaas kon meebrengen. Natuurlijk heb ik dit nodig, want ik wil later groot en sterk worden. ;-)

Alien attack!

Last night I woke up because of a strange noise. Grumming, booming and bursting all around me. I couldn't place it right ahead. When I looked around, I saw flashes coming from behind the curtains of my window. They kept on repeating. Then that amazing struck. I could hear the glass vibrating. Besides that sound there also apeared another sound. Slight tipping on my window. Then I realized there was a thunderstorm going on and it was raining cats and dogs.

I got out of my bed and had a look at it from the bigger window in the apartment. I've never seen a thunderstorm like this. The lightning kept on going. It was almost like that scene from War Of The Worlds where the alien tripods started to attack the people. I shot a video of it, and will try to get it online tonight.

Luckily when I got up this morning, everything was still there on my body, so it seems the aliens spared me in their attack. ;-) That's good, because I still have a lot of things to do, and that's why I'm typing this now at my company office.

Vannacht werd ik wakker van een vreemd geluid. Grommend, knallend en knarsend om me heen. Ik kon niet gelijk plaatsen wat het precies was. Toen ik om me heen keek zag ik flitsen komen van achter mijn gordijnen. Ze bleven maar herhalen. Toen die oorverdovende klap. Ik kon het glas horen resoneren. Naast dat zware geknal begon ik ook een ander geluid te horen. Zacht getik tegen het glas van het raam. Toen besefte ik me dat er een flink onweer boven mijn hoofd hing en dat het nu met bakken uit de lucht viel.

Ik ben toen uit mijn bed geklommen om het toch maar eens van dichtbij te gaan bekijken bij het grote raam van ons appartement. Ik heb nog nooit onweer zoals dit gezien. De bliksem bleef maar continu inslaan. Bijna net zoals die scene van War Of The Worlds waarbij de tripods de mensen beginnen aan te vallen. Ik heb er een kleine video van geschoten en zal proberen om deze online te krijgen.

Toen ik vanmorgen op stond, was gelukkig nog alles van mijn lichaam daar, dus het lijkt er op dat de marsmannetjes mij hebben gespaard in hun aanval. ;-) Dat is mooi, want ik moet nog een boel doen en dat is waarom ik dit berichtje nu tik op het kantoor van mijn werk.

Scheißen!

... or not. Yesterday we woke up with the unplesant surprise that our toilet couldn't flush anymore. Stangely enough the reservoir was not refilled with new water. However, the tap water was still working perfectly. So this finally made clear for me that our toilet uses sea water to flush. This also explained why we sometimes experience a bad sea water smell in our apartment.

The problem was caused by the HK water supply company and our front desk assured us that they were working as hard as possible on the problem. Our whole neighbourhood Hung Hom seemed to share the same problem. When we got back home from work the toilet was still not working, and it was good that we used the toilet at our office that day.

This morning the problem seems to be fixed since we finally can flush the toilet again. I've never expected to be happy to see that smelly brown sea water running down the toilet... :-)

... of niet. Gisteren werden we wakker met de vervelende verrassing dat ons toilet niet meer kon doorspoelen. Gek genoeg werd het waterreservoir niet meer bijgevult. Aan de andere kant bleek het gewone kraanwater nog wel gewoon te werken. Dat bacht voor mij ook eindelijk helderheid in de vraag of voor ons toilet zeewater werd gebruikt, en waarom we soms een vieze zeelucht in ons appartement ervaarden.

Het probleem werd veroorzaakt door de water nutsvoorziening en onze balie beneden verzekerde ons dat ze er zo hard als mogelijk aan werkten om het op te lossen. Onze hele buurt Hung Hom bleek het zelfde probleem te hebben. Toen we terug kwamen van het werk was het probeem nog steeds niet opgelost en was het maar goed dat we die dag op het werk van het toilet gebruik konden maken.

Vanmoren leek het probleem opgelost te zijn en konden we eindelijk weer doorspoelen. Ik had nooit gedacht blij te zijn om het stinkende bruine zeewater weer in ons toilet te zien. :-)

Sad news...

Today I have some sad news to report. Our dear friend Adam is going to leave us since he has found a job in Bangkok, Thailand. Although I'm very happy for him, I already know I'm going to miss the great evenings here in HK. However, since I've still have some plans to do a trip before I go back to The Netherlands, we probably going to visit him in Bangkok, and I'm already sure that it will become a great weekend. It was a great time with him here in HK, as this movie of last weekend proves...

This week has been incredible stressful for me. Our project at work is nearing a major deadline, and I still have a lot of stuff to do. Therefore I'm even planning to work this weekend. Yep, it's that bad, but it will be worthwhile... However, I hope to report a small success booked during our presentation next Tuesday. :-)

Now I've been here for 5 months, I've experienced a few changes in the weather. The last weeks are zo amazingly hot. Just walking for a few minutes outside gives you the impression you're taking a shower, because you bathing in your own sweat! The last few days I also experienced some havy thunderstorms with lots of rain. Damn, yesterday morning I almost thought there was some kind of terrorist attack since the buldering sound of the thunder was so loud!

For the people at home, wondering when I finally get back, I can confirm the return date. I'm going to catch the plane at midnight of 2-3 August. So I'll arrive on 3rd of August in The Netherlands. Just in time to catch up with good old friends at the Zomerparkfeest festival in my hometown. :-)

Vandaag heb ik slecht nieuws te rapporteren... Onze goede vriend Adam moet ons helaas verlaten omdat hij een baan heeft gevonden in Bangkok, Thailand. Ondanks dat ik erg blij voor hem ben, weet ik nu al dat ik de gezellige avonden hier in Hong Kong ga missen. Maar omdat ik nog steeds van plan ben om wat te reizen voordat ik terug kom naar Nederland, vermoed ik dat ik nog wel een bezoekje ga brengen aan Bangkok. Ik weet nu al dat dat een geweldig weekend wordt. Net zoals het hier ook een geweldige tijd was met Adam, zoals dit filmpje van afgelopen weekend wel kan bevestigen...

Deze week was ongelooflijk stessvol voor mij. We naderen een belangrijke deadline met ons project op het werk, en ik moet nog steeds een boel doen. Daarom ben ik zelfs van plan om dit weekend te gaan werken. Ja, het is zelfs zo erg, maar het is wel de moeite waard... Tenminste, ik hoop jullie a.s. dinsdag te kunnen rapporteren dat we een klein succes hebben geboekt. :-)

Nu ik hier voor 5 maanden ben geweest heb ik een boel veranderingen in het weer meegemaakt. De laatste weken zijn bijzonder heet geweest. Gewoon even wat wandelen voelt aan alsof je aan het douchen bent, want je baddert in het zweet! De laatste dagen heb ik ook wat zware onweersstormen meegemaakt. Sjonge, gisterochtend dacht ik zelfs dat er haast een terroristenaanval gaande was gezien het gebulder van de donder loeihard was!

Voor de mensen thuis, zich afvragend wanneer ik nu eindelijk terug kom, kan ik de terugkomstdag bevestigen. Ik ga om middernacht tussen 2-3 augustus het vliegtuig pakken. Dus, ik kom op 3 augustus in Nederland aan. Precies op tijd om alle oude vrienden te zien op het Zomerparkfeest in Venlo. :-)

Finally gone mad!

Yes, it was bound to happen, that I'm finally gone mad by trying to learn Chinese! Yes, you hear that right, I'm planning to speak Chinese. But not only speak, read it as well!
Unfortunately here in Hong Kong they speak the Cantonese dialect, so my Mandarin Chinese will not be that of a use rather than if I would learn Cantonese. However, Cantonese is sooo difficult with it's 9 tones, instead of just the 5 tones in Mandarin. So Mandarin is a good start, and maybe one day I will be able to manage Cantonese as well. But first try Mandarin. :-)

Ja, het kon niet ontkomen worden, maar ik ben daadwerkelijk gek geworden door nu Chinees te proberen leren! Ja, dat heb je goed gehoord, ik wil Chinees kunnen praten. Maar niet alleen praten, maar ook lezen!
Jammergenoeg spreken ze hier in Hong Kong alleen het Kantonees dialect, dus mijn Mandarijn zal niet zo nuttig zijn dan wanneer ik Kantonees zou leren. Echter, Kantonees is zoooveel moeilijker met zijn 9 tonen in plaats van de slechts 5 tonen in het Mandarijn. Dus Mandarijn is een mooie start en misschien beheers ik ooit een dag nog wel het Kantonees. Maar eerst Mandarijn proberen. :-)

Hot Pot

After a lot of planning, postponing and rescheduling it was finally done, we would have a hot pot with my pen pal Wallis. I met her months ago and since that time we've been e-mailing a lot. It's fun, because she's a local (Hongkongnese) and knows a lot of Hong Kong. One of our conversations turned to the subject hot pot, and we both thought it was a great opportunity to see each other again, since it had been such a long time ago we met. So she knew the restaurant, and I had to fetch some friend to join along. Arranging this was harder than I expected, but Friday one week ago it was settled and we could finally have our hot pot. It was great!

In the photo above you can see from left to the right: Dennis, me, Eva, Adam, Wallis and Patrick. We're all sitting around the table with in the middle the hot pot. It's really just a pot with boiling sauce. Ours was separated into two parts, the spicy one for the die-hards and the mild one for the wees. After my mouth was burned out from the spice, I could enjoy normally the food from the spicy part. It's very easy, just put your meat, vegetables or fish in the boiling water and wait while enjoying a cup of tea or in our case also sake. The pot is filled with other meat stuff and vegetables and you just scoop it out of the pot when you're hungry and it's done. Yes, it's kind alike the fondue known by the Dutch readers. Very tasty and certainly worthwhile for a second try! :-)

Na een hoop geplan, verschuiven en gedoe was het eindelijk zo ver, we zouden een hot pot hebben met mijn penvriendin Wallis. I heb haar een paar maanden geleden ontmoet, en sinds die tijd hebben we een hoop liggen e-mailen. Erg leuk, want ze is een lokale (Hongkongnees) en weet een hoop van Hong Kong. Een van onze gesprekken ging op een gegeven over op het onderwerp hot pot, en ons leek het een mooie gelegenheid om elkaar weer eens te zien, gezien dat alweer een behoorlijke tijd geleden was na onze ontmoeting. Zij wist het restaurant en zo kon ik voor de nodige vrienden zorgen. Het regelen was moeilijker dan ik dacht, maar uiteindelijk is het me gelukt en we konden eindelijk vrijdag een week geleden de hot pot houden. En het was geweldig!

In de foto hierboven kun je van links naar rechts zien: Dennis, ikzelf, Eva, Adam, Wallis en Patrick. We zitten allemaal om de tafel met daarin in het midden de hot pot. Het is echt niet meer dan een pot met kokend water. Onze was verdeeld in twee stukken, een met scherpe saus voor de durvers en een met een wat mildere voor de mietjes. Nadat mijn mond kapotgeschroeid was van de pittigheid kon ik eindelijk normaal van het eten uit het pittige deel genieten. Het is erg eenvoudig, schep je vlees, groente of vis op en leg deze in het kokende water en wacht terwijl je geniet van een kopje thee of in ons geval, sake. De pot was verder gevuld met ander vlees en goente en dat kon je net als de rest gewoon uit de pot scheppen en opeten als je hongerig bent of als het gaar is. Ja, het is inderdaad een beetje zoals het fondue bekend bij de Nederlandse lezers. Erg lekker en zeker de moeite waard voor een tweede keer! :-)

Patricks parents in Hong Kong

Wow, one new post from Patrick. Thats pretty quick after the last post of only 1 week ago ;).

Well, my parents arrived last Saturday in Hong Kong, so that is why I'm posting on our blog. We've already seen a lot of things. We went to Shenzhen on Sunday for some tailor made clothes, dvd's, handbags, etc. We have already seen Lang Kwai Fong (Of course!!), and some other bars on the Kowloon side. Yesterday we went to the horse races, which was very cool, but to bad that we still are not able to buy a Ferrari. For the rest my mom and sister did a lot of shopping. The weather has been pretty bad this week, a lot of rain and clouds. But luckily all the shops are inside shopping malls ;).

For the rest; we will go to Macao on Saturday, and probably some rooftop bbq somewhere this weekend, and on monday (my parents silver wedding day) we will go for dinner in the evening in a nice restaurant with a good view (if the weather is OK). I will post some photos this weekend, because I'm not able to do that from this PC.

The story continues...

Believe it or not, but I received another set of new banking cards from my bank in The Netherlands. So once again I had to contact my bank to clear this thing up. This time I'm still able to use my banking card. They are now going to block one of the credit cards, but something tells me that therefore this story is still not over... Another thing of interest is that the chips on my cards start to rust. I think it is because of the humidity here in HK, but let's hope this will not cause any problems...

Besides banking troubles I'm doing very well. Tomorrow is a public holiday - Buddha's birthday - and I'm planning to visit the Cheung Chau Bun Festival. I'm quite exited about that, since I saw something about it in the History Museum. Actually, I haven't told you yet about it, but the museum was very interesting. Especially because it took me two days and in total 6 hours to see it all, and then I even skipped some small parts.

This week I also had a couple nice dinners with Patrick's parents and sister. I'm also looking forward for the weekend, because then I might take a second chance to jump from the Macau Tower. But I have to check how the weather is, because it's quite windy lately...

Geloof het of niet, maar ik heb wederom een nieuw setje bankpassen ontvangen vanuit Nederland. Dus voor de zoveelste keer moest ik weer een telefoontje plegen om de boel op orde te brengen. Deze keer kan ik gelukkig nog wel geld opnemen. Ze gaan nu een van de credit cards blokkeren, maar iets zegt me dat daardoor dit verhaal nog niet afgelopen is... Iets anders interessants is dat mijn chips op de passen beginnen te roesten. Ik denk dat het komt door de hoge luchtvochtigheid hier in Hong Kong. Laten we hopen dat dit niet ook meer problemen gaat geven. ;-)

Naast bankproblemen gaat het verder prima. Morgen heb ik een vrije dag vanwege de public hiliday Buddha's Birthday, en ben ik van plan om het Bun Festival op Cheung Chau te bezoeken. Dat lijkt me erg leuk omdat ik er vanalles over heb gezien in het History Museum. Hierover heb ik jullie nog niet verteld, maar het museum was erg interessant. Misschien ook wel doordat ik er twee dagen en in totaal 6 uur voor nodig had om alles te zien, en dan had ik nog wat stukjes over geslagen.

Deze week heb ik nog een paar keer lekker gegeten met Patrick zijn ouders en zusje. Ik kijk ook al uit naar het weekend, want dan ga ik misschien nog een keer van de Macau Tower springen. Maar dat moet ik nog even zien, want het weer is de laatste tijd een beetje winderig...

Weather report

The weather today is so hot. You sweat immediately when you go outside. However, there is cool weather coming next week (a lot of rain), so that's nice. Though some people might be less happy about that, like Patrick's parents and sister who will arrive next week. But hey, too hot is not nice either... ;-)

It is even so hot that it's no fun anymore to hike, so I have to find something else to do. Luckily I arranged a Hot Pot tomorrow, and with 9 people on te guest list (or maybe even more!) that will be a good start of the weekend. :-)

Vandaag is het vreselijk heet weer. Zo warm zelfs, dat je spontaan begint te zweten als je maar een paar seconden buiten de deur bent. Gelukkig komt er de volgende week wel koeler weer (flink wat regen) aan, hoewel sommige mensen dat minder leuk kunnen vinden. Bijvoorbeeld Patricks's ouders en zusje die volgende week hier aan komen. Maar ach, té heet is ook niet leuk. ;-)

Het is zelfs zo heet dat het niet eens meer leuk is om te wandelen, dus moet ik maar iets anders vinden om in het weekend te doen. Gelukkig heb ik wel een Hot Pot kunnen regelen, en met 9 mensen op de gastenlijst (er komen misschien nog meer!) wordt dat een mooi begin van het weekend. :-)

I'm still alive

After lots of complaints and critisims about me not writing blogs anymore. Well, here to prove that I'm still alive and writing (kicking) a (short) blog from me.

So what has been going on lately... well we have been working very hard on our internship. As the end is drawing near (2 more months to go :-( ), we also started on our final internship report. It's a little bit boring to write that report, but on the other hand, it's a part of the study/internship and it gives a nice view of what we have been doing :).

Besides working we also have the need to entertain ourselves (of course!!). As we became more healthier and doing less drinking and bar hopping, we did some hiking, sports (squash!!) & beach and swimming! Of course very good and healthy! We havent gone completly insane though, because we still go to the bars during the weekends ;-).

This saturday my parents and ( little ;-) ) sister will be coming, so you will be seeing more posts and photos by me then.

Na een hele bult klachten en commentaar dat er niks meer op de site verscheen van mij. Hier even een korte blog dat ik nog steeds in leven ben ;).

Wat hebben we allemaal gedaan de laatste tijd... natuurlijk hebben we erg hard gewerkt aan onze stage, we hebben afgelopen weken wat overuurtjes gemaakt omdat er een aantal belangrijke dingen af moesten. En verder hebben we natuurlijk aan het stageverslag gewerkt. Aangezien we over 2 maanden afstuderen moet er ook een verslag komen. Dit is wel een beetje saai om allemaal te typen. Maar ja, het is een onderdeel van de stage en studie, en toch wel erg belangrijk. Verder is het ook wel leuk, want het geeft wel een goed beeld van wat we allemaal gedaan hebben gedurende de stage. Zeker interessant en leuk om te lezen!

Verder hebben we onzelf natuurlijk ook moeten vermaken. Afgelopen weken is dit niet helemaal gegaan zoals jullie van ons gewend zijn. Aangezien we minder stappen en meer gezond doen! Hebben we veel gesport, gewandeld, etc... Natuurlijk zijn we niet helemaal gek... in de weekenden bezoeken we uiteraard nog gewoon de bar (studenten he..).

Komende zaterdag komen mijn ouders en zus(je) naar Hong Kong. Heb er echt zin in! Waarschijnlijk komen er dan tussendoor ook meer berichtjes en foto's op de site, want weet al een hoop dingen die ik ze wil laten zien.

It's working!

Yes! Finally! I just made a call to The Netherlands to complain about my unlocked banking cards, but that was not necessary, because the woman on the other end of the line told me that my cards were unlocked. Apparently they unlocked it silently. I checked my internet banking service right ahead, and yes! It's working! Ahh, so happy about that. And Patrick probably also, because now he doesn't have to serve as my personal bank. :-D

For the rest, everything is going well except for one thing, sleep... Lately I have so much fun, that it's hard to keep up with enough sleep, haha. :-)

Ja! Eindelijk! Ik heb zojuist een telefoontje richting Nederland gepleegd, om te klagen over mijn geblokkeerde bankpassen. Maar dat klagen bleek niet nodig te zijn, omdat de vrouw aan de andere klant van de lijn verelde dat ze al gedeblokkeerd waren. Blijkbaar hebben ze dit stilzwijgend gedaan. Ik heb dus meteen internetbankieren getest, en ja! het werkt! Ahh, daar ben ik echt reuze blij mee. En Patrick waarschijnlijk ook, want hij hoeft nu niet meer als mijn persoonlijke Bank te dienen. :-D

Voor de rest gaat alles prima, op één ding na: slaap... De laatste tijd gaat het zo lekker hier dat ik moeite heb om de slaap bij te houden, haha. :-)

Maakt u zich geen zorgen...

"Please don't worry..." that was what the woman told me on the phone, when she confirmed that my banking cards were unblocked and should work without problems. My bank issued new banking cards and send them to my address in The Netherlands. However, I should receive them here in Hong Kong. So it took a few days before they got them back at their office and send them here to my address in Hong Kong. That took a few e-mails and phone calls before it was arranged. Luckily I received the cards on time, and sent directly an fax to NL to unlock the cards. The next day I received the call that my cards were succesfully unlocked. At least, that is what I heard and thought.

But it seems now to a bit different. Today I tried to place an online order, but the system refused. So I tried to log in to the online banking system, but that didn't work as well. So I called the international help line, and they told me that my card wasn't unlocked. Very nice... I should have kown, when I received an e-mail from the bank that my cards were just sent by mail, however, I was holding my new cards just in my hand! My reply ended up in an out-of-use mailbox.

So I'm very furious now and I'm really watching what I take in my hands, because I'm about to break something in two.

... dat is wat de vrouw me aan de telefoon vertelde toen ze me bevestigde dat mijn bankpassen waren gedeblokkeerd en probleemloos zouden moeten werken. Mijn bank - ik laat de naam maar even in het midden - heeft namelijk pasgeleden nieuwe passen uitgegeven en heeft die naar het thuisadres in Nederland verstuurd. Maar deze moesten natuurlijk naar Hong Kong worden verstuurd. Het duurde daarom even voordat ze terug waren gehaald van het postkantoor en opnieuw vanuit hun kantoor naar Hong Kong werden verstuurd. Bovendien kostte dat eerst nog wat e-mails en telefoontjes voordat het geregeld was. Gelukkig kwamen de passen wel op tijd binnen en ik heb toen ook direct een fax naar NL gestuurd om deze te deblokkeren. De volgende dag kreeg ik gelijk een telefoontje dat deze succesvol waren gedeblokkeerd. Tenminste, dat is wat ik dacht van wat ik had gehoord.

Maar dat blijkt nu een beetje anders te zijn. Vandaag probeerde ik een online bestelling te plaatsen, maar het betaalsysteem weigerde. Dus probeerde ik maar in te loggen bij het internetbankieren systeem, maar dat weigerde ook. Daarom probeerde ik het maar bij de internationale helplijn, en die vertelden me dat mijn kaart nog geblokkeerd was. Heel erg mooi.... Ik had het kunnen weten, vooral toen ik een mailtje van de bank ontving waarin stond dat mijn nieuwe passen die dag waren verzonden terwijl ik ze op dat moment in mijn haden had! Mijn antwoord op die e-mail belandde ook in een ongebruikte mailbox.

Dus ik ben op het moment furieus, en ik moet echt oppassen met wat ik in mijn handen neem omdat ik op het moment sta het in tweeën te breken.

Unfortunately I haven't got time to write all the blogs I still want to do. However, I did have time to finetune my photos and put them online in the photoalbum. Hopefully I will have some time this weekend to tell about all the fun stuff I did like the Bangkok trip, hike and BBQ with colleagues, and of course, my hike with Patrick. Yes, that's right, the evidence is in the photoalbum! ;-)

Beautiful start of the week

There I'm sitting again, all alone in this empty office. However, the sunrise is beautiful today, and that promises that it will be a nice day, just like yesterday. Also, my stressfree journey to work will have a positive effect, and tonight I can leave the office on time. That's good, because then I've finally time to report you about all the stuff that happened lately. :-)

Daar zit ik dan weer, zielsalleen in dit lege kantoor. Daarentegen was de zonsopkomst vanmorgen prachtig! En dit beloofd dan ook dat het weer een mooie dag wordt, net als gisteren. Daarbij zal mijn stressvrije reis naar het werk ook een positief effect hebben en kan ik vanavond op tijd het kantoor verlaten. Dat is mooi, want dan heb ik eindelijk tijd om eens over alles te schrijven wat ik heb meegemaakt de laatste weken. :-)

Good morning HK!

Today I'm the first to arrive at the office. And it's really great! No traffic at all! No people walking in front of you! So relaxed and nice to enjoy the wonderful sunrise. It was more by coincidence that I arrived this early, at 8am, but I might do this more often. :-)

Dutch:

Vandaag ben ik de allereerste op het werk. En het is geweldig! Geen verkeer! Geen drukte op straat en mensen die je afsnijden. Zo rusig en mooi om van de prachtige zonsopkomst te genieten. Het was meer toeval om al zo vroeg hier te zijn om 8 uur 's ochtends, maar misschien dat ik dit nog wel vaker ga doen. :-)

Group hike & BBQ

Yesterday was a public holiday in Hong Kong - too bad we had to miss Queens Day - and Patrick and I had the idea to do some activities with our colleagues. So the week before we checked with Ivy of HRM, and before the weekend we found a group that would like to join us on a BBQ. So yesterday we met at the Shau Kei Wan MTR station, and headed towards our starting point near the Tai Tam Gap. We planned to do the Dragon's Back hike I did before. But this time we would start half way, because otherwise we would have to do a massive climb up the hill. Luckily the bus did all the hard work, because we were already close to the top when we got off the bus. Although the stairs at first sight looked quite difficult, the complete hike was quite easily. The hike was not that of a challenge, but the view was great, and the weather was also nice with a lot of sun and low humidity.


When we finished the hike we all took the bus to Shek-O beach to enjoy there the nice weather and prepare for a delicious HK-style BBQ. I couldn't resist a swim in the sea, so after a fresh dive I was ready to gain some energy again. More people joined us at the BBQ and all together it was a very enjoyable evening.

Gisteren was een public holiday in Hong Kong - jammergenoeg hebben we ditjaar Koninginnedag moeten missen - en Patrick en ik hadden het idee om eens wat leuks te doen met onze collega's. Daarom hadden we dit vorige week aan Ivy van HRM voorgesteld en voor het weekend hadden we al een groep die mee wilde gaan voor een wandeltocht en BBQ. Zodoende ontmoeten we elkaar gisteren bij Shau Kei Wan metrostation en zijn we richting het startpunt bij de Tai Tam Gap gegaan. We waren van plan om daar de Dragon's Back te beklimmen die ik al eens op een eerdere hike had gedaan. Ditkeer starten we alleen halverwege omdat het begin een enorme klim de berg op was. Gelukkig had de bus al het harde werk gedaan toen we bij onze bestemming uitstapten. Hoewel de trappen in het begin nogal moeilijk leken, viel de hele hike wel mee. Niet een grote uitdaging, maar het zicht was erg mooi en het week was net zo met veel zon en lage luchtvochtigheid.

Toen we klaar waren met de wandeltocht hebben we gezamelijk de bus gepakt naar Shek-O beach. Om daar van het mooie weer te genieten en voor te bereiden op de HK-style BBQ. Ik kon het niet weerstaan om de zee in te gaan, dus na een frisse duik was ik gereed om weer wat energie te krijgen. Meer mensen deden mee met de BBQ en alles tezamen werd het een erg mooie avond.

Deep fried beef sausage

This Friday lunch should be special and we made it special! After 4 months being here in HK we couldn't resist it anymore and had to get a deep fried beef sausage aka Frikandel in Dutch. Luckily there is one - yes, just only one - Dutch restaurant here in HK where they have it. So we left the office a tiny bit earlier to head towards Central to get to the restaurant next to the SoHo escalater.

Of course there were only Dutch people, but stangely enough no Dutch waiters or chefs. In that small but cosy place we both ordered our broodje frikandel and broodje kroket. It was of course served with mayonnaise, Heinz ketchup, unions and mustard. Delicious and so good to have. I almost felt like being back in The Netherlands. :-)

Dutch:

Deze vrijdag moest een speciale lunch worden en dat hebben we er ook van gemaakt. Na 4 maanden hier in HK te zijn, konden we het niet meer aan en moesten we een frikandel zien te krijgen. Gelukkig is er een Nederlands restaurant - jawel, slechts één - hier in HK waar ze precies dat hebben. Dus we zijn een tikkie eerder van 't kantoor vertrokken om richting Central te gaan en daar langs de SoHo roltrap het restaurant te vinden.

Natuurlijk waren er alleen Nederlanders, maar gek genoeg uitsluitend Chinese bediening. In dat kleine maar gezellige restaurantje hebben we onze broodjes kroket en frikandel besteld. Natuurlijk geserveerd met mayo, Heinz, uitjes en mosterd. Heerlijk en fijn om dat weer te eten. Het voelde haast of ik weer in Nederland terug was. :-)

Nieuwe stek

Last Friday it was time again to do the search for beer. This time I decided to go to the Fringe Club. I've seen it a couple of times mentioned in the HK Magazine, and that night there would play several punk/rock live bands. Since I didn't see any live bands for too long for a HK point of view, Patrick and I headed for the LKF-area.

There where quite a lot of people when we arrived there. And that was for the first time I saw some really alternative people in HK. Normally all the Chinese have the same dress code, but this bunch of people was very colorful and individual.

It inmediately told me a lot of this place, and I could sence the relaxed vibes I also experience when I go to my favorite pub Kafee de Splinter in The Netherlands. The joint is a mixture between my favourite bar and the Perron 55_ pop podium. Nice decorations, small cosy stage, tables on the sides, and some very nice draft beers including Hoegaarden. :-)

There were several bands performing, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes very loud and sometimes very experimental. But if I count the bits, it was quite fun to be there. Had a good laugh and the beer tasted also nice. But the best thing had still to come, Hard Candy, thé performance of the night. So when the very drunk stage announcer finally managed to get on his stage, the girl-band started to play. One guitar player with kamikaze red band painted around her eyes, one English base player with typical look and a drummer with thick black border square glasses. The instrumental performance was very good, but like all the other bands, they better try to find a dedicated singer who knows more than screaming... But then again, this suited better the punk scene, and we could have a good laugh about it. :-) After a chat with the base player I went home early, because I planned a hike the next day. Patrick was warmed up for a longer night.

So I planned to hike yesterday, but it didn't work out that well. The weather was not that nice. When I arrived at Sai Kung, it was rainy and very humid. Not the perfect conditions for a 5 hours hike trough unknown terrain in the New Terretories. So I took the bus back home. Because I really would like to do some exercise, I headed to our gym. There I did some cycling (the only safe place for that in HK), and after that I ran 10 kilometers. So eventually still got my exercise. :-)

After that it was time for some cleaning and do the boring laundry stuff. But, I had something to look out for. On Friday I saw that there would be an impressive live fusion jazz band on Saturday. So a couple of hours later I was again at the Fringe Club. This time it was not that crowded. I even thought it was closed. But when I opened the door I already could hear the jazzy notes and rythems. The place was filled with small tables and people were already gently knodging ther heads enjoying the music. The band was really awesome. It almost sounded like a studio recored album, but everything was a jamm! You could amlost only notice it by the very progressive style and long lasting endings of the compilations.

The band was lead by a base player who really understood his instrument. You could see that he was used to play with the drummer, because they had their amazing solo moments together. The Saxophone player melted everything togeher and made sure that it wouldn't end up too experimental or progressive. But the star of the evening was probably the piano player. Big black guy, behind his big piano. But his fingers went like crazy on the keys. Amazingly fast but with a nice full sound and sometimes nice and gently. World influences, samba and salsa passed by. It was a great evening, and I'll definitely be there when they play again. Maybe then won't forget my camera. ;-)

So to sum it, I've found a great new place to visit in the weekends. They have lots of different live music and other artistic performances. You probably hear more about it soon... :-)

Afgelopen vrijdag was het weer eens tijd voor een zoektocht naar bier. Dit keer heb ik besloten om een bezoekje te brengen aan de Fringe Club. Ik heb er al een aantal keer over gelezen in het HK Magazine, en deze avond zouden er live punk/rock-bands spelen. Aangezien ik al volgens HK standaard te lang geen live muziek meer heb gezien, zijn Patrick en ik weer in de richting van LKF gegaan.

Het was al behoorlijk druk toen we er aankwamen. En dat was ook gelijk de eerste keer dat ik hier in HK echte alternatieve mensen zag. Normaal gesproken kleden de Chinezen zich hier vrij saai en gelijk, maar dit stelletje was erg kleurrijk en individueel.

Dat vertelde me gelijk een boel over deze plek, en ik kon de gemoedelijke sfeer proeven die ik ook in mijn favoriete bar Kafee de Splinter in Nederland ervaar. De tent is een mix van mijn favoriete bar en het Perron 55_ poppodium. Mooie decoraties, klein gezellig podiumpje, tafeltjes aan de kanten en een paar lekkere bieren van de tap waaronder Hoegaarden. :-)

Er speelden een aantal bands, soms goed, soms slecht, soms er lawaaierig en soms behoorlijk experimenteel. Maar als ik alles optel, dan was het prima vertoeven daar. Ik heb goed kunnen lachen en het bier smaakte ook prima. Maar het beste moest nog steeds komen, Hard Candy, hét optreden van de avond. Dus toen de behoorlijk dronken aankondiger eindelijk op het podium was geklommen, begon de girl-band te spelen. Een gitaar speelster met een rode kamikaze band geschminkt bij haar ogen, een Engelse bassiste met typische look en een drumster met vierkantige bril met dikke zwarte randen. Het instrumentele spel was erg goed, maar net als bij de andere bands kon de zang beter aan een toegewijde zanger overgelaten worden die meer kan dan enkel schreeuwen. Maar aan de andere kant, dit paste wel beter bij de punk scene en we konden er wel om lachen. :-) Na wat kletsen met de bassiste ben ik op tijd naar huis gegaan omdat ik een hike gepland had staan voor de volgende dag. Patrick was nog wel in voor een langere nacht.

Ik had dus een hike voor gisteren gepland staan, maar daar is niet veel van gekomen. Het weer was niet al te best. Toen ik in Sai Kung aan kwam was het aan het regenen en het was behoorlijk vochtig. Niet echt de perfecte condities voor een hike van 5 uur door onbekend terrein in de New Terretories. Dus ik heb maar weer de bus terug gepakt. Omdat ik toch nog wat aan beweging wilde doen, ben ik naar onze fitnessruimte gegaan. Daar heb ik wat gefietst (de enige veilige plek daarvoor in HK) en daarna nog 10 kilometer gerend. Dus uiteindelijk nog steeds mijn oefening gehad.

Daarna was het tijd voor wat schoonmaken en het saaie was- en strijkwerk. Maar, ik had wel iets om naar uit te kijken. Vrijdag had ik namelijk gezien dat er zaterdag een indrukwekkende live fusion jazzband zou spelen. Dus een paar uur later stond ik weer voor de deur bij de Fringe Club. Deze keer was het niet zo druk en ik dacht haast dat het gesloten was. Maar toen ik de deur open trok klonk mij al de jazzy muzieknoten en ritmes in de oren. De ruimte was gevuld met kleine tafeltjes en stoelen en mensen waren al rustig hun hoofden aan het knikken, genietend van de muziek. De band was werkelijk geweldig. Het klonk haast als een studio album, maar alles was een jamm! Je kon het haast alleen merken aan de progressieve stijl en langdradige eindes van de compilaties.

De band werd geleid door een bassist die zijn instrument goed begreep. Je kon zien dat hij vaker met de drummer speelde gezien ze indrukwekkende solo's samen deden. De meneer op de sax smolt het geheel samen en zorgde er voor dat alles niet te experimenteel en progressief werd. Maar de ster van de avond was toch wel de pianist. Dikke zwarte meneer achter zijn grote vleugel. Zijn vingers gingen als een gek over de toetsen. Fascinerend snel maar met een vol geluid en soms weer lekker rustig. World invloeden, samba en salsa kwamen voorbij. Het was een geweldige avond en ik kom er zeker weer als ze opnieuw spelen. Misschien dan niet mijn camera vergeten. ;-)

Om het op te sommen, heb ik nu dis een geweldige nieuwe plek gevonden om te bezoeken in het weekend. Ze hebben in een boel verschillende muziekstijlen live-bands daar, maar ook artistieke optredens. Je zult er binnenkort vast meer over horen... :-)

Relax!

Well, it's not that I jumped again from the Macau Tower and smashed in thousand pieces on the ground, but it's just that I'm not in the mood to type the whole Bangkok story when I get home from work. So for that, you'll have to wait a bit, because we're on a tight schedule at work, and I'm also addicted to another Dan Brown novel that I have to finish...

Meanwhile we left the wild nightlife a bit behind, and are now into relaxation. Last weekend we went both on Saturday and Sunday to the beach, and the night in between was filled with watching movies at home.

Yesterday we went two times to an arcade. One close to our office and one close to our home. They are extemely useful to get rid of built up stress and it's amazing how those Chinese beat the machines...

The weather today is amazing. Bright sky, sunny, great sight and most important: not too warm and humid! I hope the weather stays like this for a few days... But it will probably rain in the weekend, just about the time I want to go for a hike... The weather here is so unpredictable...

In Dutch:

Nou, het is niet zo dat ik opnieuw van de Macau Tower ben besprongen en in duizend stukjes op de grond te pletter ben geslagen, maar ik ben gewoon na het werk niet in de stemming te om het hele Bangkok verhaal te tikken. Dus daarop moeten jullie helaas wachten, want ik heb een krap schema op het werk en ik ben daarnaast verslaafd aan een boek van Dan Brown.

Intussen hebben we het nachtleven achter ons gelaten en zijn we meer aan het relaxen. Afgelopen weekend zijn we op zaterdag en zondag naar het strand gegaan, en de nacht daartussen hebben we gevuld met het kijken van films.

Gisteren zijn we naar een arcade hal gegaan. Een dicht bij het werk en de ander dicht bij ons thuis. Ze zijn ontzettend handig om van je opgebouwde stress af te komen, en verder is het wonderbaarlijk om te zien hoe die Chinezen die machines de baas zijn.

Het weer vandaag is fantastisch. Heldere lucht, zonnig, geweldig zicht en het belangrijkst: niet te warm en vochtig! Ik hoop dat het weer zo voorlopig nog even blijft... Maar waarschijnlijk zal het in het weekend wel weer regenen, net als ik wil gaan hiken... Het weer hier is zo onvoorspelbaar...

Ready to go back home

Sorry mum and dad, but I mean to my apartment in Hong Kong... We've had a great holiday here in Bangkok. We've done lots of cool stuff and the weather was good too. With our HK experience we could go to all the places we wanted, so that's very nice. I'll put an day by day report on the blog very soon, because it wouldn't fit in one, or you'll fall asleep while reading! :-D Ok, got to stop now. I'm typing this message at the airport. Going to catch my plain.

Sorry mama en papa, maar ik bedoel dat ik weer terug ga naar het appartement in Hong Kong... We hebben een geweldige vakantie gehad hier in Bangkok. We hebben een boel leuke dingen gedaan en het weer werkte ook lekker mee. Met onze ervaring met HK konden we ook alle plekken bezoeken, dus dat is heel mooi. Ik plaats binnenkort een verslag van onze reis online, per dag. Dit omdat het niet in een log zou passen, of anders zou iedereen in slaap vallen tijdens het lezen... :-D Ok, ik moet nu stoppen. Ik ga nu het vligtuig pakken, want ik typ dit bericht nu op het vliegveld.

Blogging from the airport

At the moment we are at Bangkok airport. We are waiting for the plane to leave, which should be in a hour. I'm typing this log on a very crappy metal keyboard, so I won't make it long, and I will translate it to dutch later. I promise I put on a bigger log later this week in Hong Kong. For now, the Bangkok holiday was excellent!

Lenzendrama in Bangkok

Greetings from Bangkok! Well, we can please you with the fact that we arrived safely in Bangkok! Unfortunally the other (cheaper) flight that we could take didn't crash, so I feel a bit ripped off, but the luxury of this amazing Hotel makes all good. :-)

When we left Hong Kong the weather was foggy again, so I hoped for the best in Bangkok. The flight was a bit delayed, but we had an easy flight to Bangkok. The weather turned up quite well. Actually, just great! Sunny weather with small clowd patches and a geenhouse temparature. This was of course the first thing I noticed when I got off the plain in Bangkok. My sister was so right, it's just like wandering into a greenhouse. We arrived at the new airport, which is still not completely finished. Despite of that, we could get very easy to the taxi with our friends (Victor and Alvin) who also went to Bangkok. We had a different hotel than theirs, so we took our own taxi. Not the rip-off ones they offer you when you get past the douane, but the normal ones. However, normal... Our bags were tied up with a very thin elastic rope in the trunk of a tuned taxi. Luckily the airco was on in the taxi, so we raced down the highway in this taxi with speed. We had a fixed pice, so traffic jams woudn't ruin everyting. However, the airco did. At one point the bloody thing broke down and I was wandering in sweat. Luckily the outside temparature was not that bad traveling at a over the maximum speed on the highway, so the opened windows did their job. :-)

The arrival at the Hotel was a bit weird. Our taxi got bomb-checked with guards using mirrors to look underneath the car, and I got then my first Thai smile. Normally guard have to look impressive, but this one smiled with such friendlyness that it just made me feel good. The check-in was in the same nice way, and we were brought to our kingdom. Man, what a room. I'm so happy I don't do a backpack trip right now. :-)
So we headed straight to the pool for a fresh dive. But first I had to took some pictures of the riverside because the red sunset was so beautiful. We settled down at our chairs and I got in the water for a swim. The wather was very warm but still very refreshing. I decided to do a quick dive and wondered if I could open my eyes in the wather because of my lenses. Well that question got answered pretty fast, because I lost my right lens. Unfortunately I left my glasses at Adam's place, so I couldn't put them on. So now I had to look trough a world of sharpness and blurryness. That was so uncomftable. So I expected the worse that my Bangkok holliday was ruined because I could not see anymore. I decided with Patrick to just go for a walk and find all those small food stands we saw on our way to the hotel, so that we could have something like a walking BBQ. Unfortunately I couln't see anything and it only got me more mad about losing my lens. Because the stands were all gone, and I couldn't see anything, we decided to just walk back to the hotel, and just have some dinner there. I would ask the next morning at the lobby if they could show us places to get day-lenses and write some Thai sentences down to help us explain to the shop people. We decided to walk tough the small shopping mall in front of the Hotel, and suddenly my eye catched the BetterVision billboard. Better vision? Well I could use that! So I went running down the street searchig for that shop. And I found it! And it was still open. I don't know how many times I said "thank you" before I went out of the shop, but it was definitely quite a lot! I'm so happy that I can see normally again and that I can still enjoy my trip here in Bangkok. To celebrate this we found a restaurant where they had small snack dishes, so we still had our BBQ. So this is were I ended up now. Typing this story in the business center in the Hotel. I'll go to bed now, but I'll post some more logs these days. So keep checking!

Groeten uit Bangkok! Nou, ik kan jullie gerust stellen met het feit dat we veilig aangekomen zijn in Bangkok! Jammer genoeg is de andere (goedkopere) vlucht die we konden nemen niet neer gestort, dus ik voel me een beetje belazerd, maar de luxe van dit hotel maakt alles goed. :-)

Toen we Hong Kong verlieten was het weer behoorlijk bagger doordat het mistig was, dus ik hoopte maar het beste voor Bangkok. The vlucht was een beetje vertraagd, maar we hadden een gemakkelijke vlucht naar Bangkok. Het weer draaide goed bij. Nou eigenlijk, fantastisch zelfs, zonnig weer met een paar wolkjes en een broeikas temperatuur. Dit was natuurlijk het eerste wat mij op viel en mijn zus Jessy had er zo gelijk over. Het voelt inderdaad alsof je een broeikas binnen stapt. We zijn aangekomen op het nieuwe vliegveld, welke nog steeds niet af is. Desondanks konden we erg gemakkelijk bij de taxi's komen met onze vrienden (Victor en Alvin) die ook met ons naar Bangkok zijn gereisd. We hadden een ander hotel dan hun, dus we zijn ieder in een eigen taxi gestapt. Niet diegene die je belazeren en roepen net nadat je de douane verlaat, maar de normale. Hoewel, normaal... Onze koffers werden vast gebonden met een wel heel dun elastisch touw in de achterbak van een dik getunede taxi. Gelukkig was de airco wel aan, dus we zijn de autosnelweg afgesjeesd met deze taxi met snelheid. We hadden een vaste prijs, dus verkeersopstoppingen konden geen prolemen vormen. De airco daarentegen deed dat wel. Het stomme ding viel op een gegeven moment uit, en ik baande in het zweet. Gelukkig was de buitentemperatuur zo gek nog niet op een snelheid over het maximum toegestaan, dus een geopend raam deed wel zijn werk. :-)

De aankomst bij het hotel was een beetje raar. Onze taxi werd gecontroleerd op bommen met spiegeltjes door bewakers en daarbij kreeg ik meteen mijn eerste Thaise glimlach. Normaal moeten bewakers intimiderend kijken, maar deze glimlachte met zo'n vriendelijkheid dat ik het er zowat warm van binnen kreeg. De check-in was op hetzelfde vriendelijke niveau en we werden naar ons koningkrijk gebracht. Man, wat een kamer! Ik ben nu zo blij dat ik geen backpack reis doe! :-)
Dus we zijn maar meteen naaar het zwembad gestormd voor een frisse duik. Maar niet voordat ik een paar foto's had geschoten van de oever van de rivier want de zonsondergang was zo mooi. We zakten neer in onze stoelen, en ik ben toen in het water gesprongen om wat te zwemmen. Het water was vrij warm, maar toch nog steeds erg verfrissend. Ik besloot om een kleine duik te maken en was me af aan het vragen of ik mijn ogen onder water open kon maken in verband met mijn lenzen. Nou, die vraag werd snel beantwoord, omdat ik toen mijn rechterlens verloor. Jammergenoeg ligt mijn bril nog steeds bij Adam, dus ik kon deze niet ter vervanging op doen. Dus nu moest ik de wereld zien door een zicht van scherpte en wazigheid. Dat was zo vervelend. Daarom verwachtte ik al het ergste en vermoedde dat deze trip verlroen was. Patrick en ik besloten maar om een wandeling te maken om alle kleine kraampjes te vinden die we hadden gezien op weg hier naar toe, zodat we zoiets konden doen als een wandelende BBQ. Jammergenoeg kon ik niets meer zien en de kraampjes waren ook al weg, dus we besloten om weer terug te gaan naar het hotel. Dit maakte me alleen maar bozer over het verliezen van de lens. Ik zou de volgende morgen bij de balie gaan vragen of ze op papier in het Thais konden schrijven hoe ik daglenzen kon kopen. We besloten om het winkelcentrum door te lopen die voor het hotel ligt, en plotseling vliel mijn oog op een reclamebord van Better Vision. Nou, dat kon ik wel gebruiken, beter zicht, dus ik rende de straat af om die winkel te vinden. En ik vond deze en nog open ook! Ik weet niet hoe vaak ik "thank you" heb gezegd voordat ik daar weer de deur uit ging, maar het was weldegelijk een hele boel! Ik ben zo blij dat ik weer normaal kan zien en dat ik nog kan genieten van deze trip. Om dit te vieren hebben we nog een restaurant gevonden waar ze allemaal kleine snack gerechten hadden en hebben zo nog onze BBQ gehad. Dus hier ben ik nu geeindigd, dit bericht aan het tikken in de Business Center van het hotel. Ik ga nu naar bed, maar ik ga de komende dagen nog meer berichtjes plaatsen. Dus blijf lezen!
